Feeling Blue? 7 Ways To Beat Your After Holiday Blahs

Feeling Blue? 7 Ways To Beat Your After Holiday Blahs

Feeling Blue? Ways to Feel Happy

Feeling blue? Stuck in a post-holiday funk?

Yes, the holidays are over. You opened your presents, ate too much, and spent time with friends and family.

As you’re taking down your decorations and getting reacquainted with your normal work week, you might feel a little bummed. If you’re feeling that way, you’re not alone.

With that said, here are 7 things I do to cheer myself up whenever I’m feeling blue. Maybe they’ll work for you too.

#1 – Cuddle up with your favorite blanket (or person)

Whether you’re cold or just feeling blah, taking a few minutes to get comfy under a soft blanket, fleece, or throw will warm you up. It’s like a great big hug!

If you can get your significant other or someone special to join you under the covers, even better!

#2 – Listen to a happy song

A quick way to kick the blues is to listen to a fun song.

Can’t think of any happy songs? I’ve got one that always perks me up. My personal favorite song to listen to when I’m feeling blue is “Love Shack” by the B-52’s. Just thinking about it as I’m writing this post is making me smile!

#3 – Laugh more

Laughing always lifts my spirits.

It could be mindless comedy, such as The Three Stooges (they had a reboot in 2012, but don’t forget about the original guys from the 30’s and 40’s), or more modern day humor, such as almost anything with Brian Regan.

#4 – Vent to a friend, your significant other, or someone you trust

If you have someone in your life you feel comfortable with, try talking with him or her about how you’re feeling. Sometimes just getting something off your chest helps a lot!

#5 – Make love (or practice some self-love!)

Having an orgasm is one of the best ways to change your mood. If you’re feeling blue, being with someone special (even if it’s yourself) has a way of making you feel better.

#6 – Move around

Don’t be a slug. While I’m not recommending you run a marathon, you should make time to get up and move around.

If you’re at work, take a walk around the building or get up from your chair once per hour and walk around the office if it’s too cold or hot outside.

If you’re at home, put on the TV and march in place or turn on some music and dance around a little. Get your blood pumping!

#7 – Do something unexpected

If you normally have cereal for breakfast, try a breakfast burrito or a salad instead. Try driving another route to work, start journaling, or learn another language – any of those qualify.

These are just some of the things I do when I’m feeling blue and need a boost.

After a few months of enjoying or tolerating the holiday season, it might take a little time to get back into the groove.

My advice is to cut yourself some slack and don’t be so hard on yourself.

If you’re more introverted and the holiday season stressed you out, try setting aside some quiet time where you can just close your eyes for a few minutes, relax, and just be.

If you’re more outgoing and the holiday season was party time, try planning a movie or game night so you still keep in touch with those in your life who matter most.
